How do you kill dust mites?Updated 2 months ago
Getting rid of dust mites requires a combination of cleaning, reducing humidity, and using certain treatments. Here’s what you can do:
1. Wash and Heat-Treat Fabrics
- Wash bedding, pillowcases, and blankets in hot water (at least 130°F / 54°C) weekly.
- Dry on high heat to kill any remaining mites.
- If items can't be washed, place them in the freezer for 24 hours to kill the mites.
2. Reduce Humidity
- Dust mites thrive in humidity above 50%. Keep indoor humidity between 30–50% by using:
- Dehumidifiers
- Air conditioners
- Proper ventilation
3. Use Allergen-Proof Covers
- Use dust-mite-proof covers on mattresses, pillows, and box springs.
- These covers prevent mites from burrowing into your bedding.
4. Vacuum and Clean Regularly
- Use a HEPA filter vacuum on carpets, upholstery, and mattresses at least twice a week.
- Steam cleaning can also kill dust mites.
5. Remove or Limit Carpets and Upholstered Furniture
- If possible, switch to hard flooring (wood, tile, or laminate) instead of carpets.
- Wash curtains or replace them with blinds.
6. Use Dust Mite Sprays
- Some sprays contain benzyl benzoate or tannic acid, which help eliminate mites.
